Tennille Sanders describes herself as a “fashion nerd”, explaining that her self-confessed title comes just as much from her scientific background in Medical Science, as it does from her analytical and investigative approach to fashion design. Tennille was born and raised in rural Queensland, where she lived until moving to Brisbane to begin studies in science. Despite Tennille’s affinity and interest in fashion, her parent’s encouraged her to pursue a degree in medical science.
Tennille followed her parent’s advice, and completed her degree in Applied Science, majoring in Medical Science in 2005; During the next five years, Tennille, found herself balancing her dual interests in science and fashion. However, in 2010 Tennille found that the balance had shifted towards fashion, which led her down a new path. This change resulted in Tennille and her husband Nick moving to Melbourne in 2011, where Tennille began her fashion education at Whitehouse Institute of Design.
During her time at Whitehouse, Tennille was awarded “Student of the Year, 2011”, Designer of the Year, 2012” and the “Betty Boop Student Designer Award”. The “Betty Boop Student Designer Award”, included in a prestigious internship at Anna Sui in New York, as well as designing a sleepwear range for Betty Boop stocked exclusively in Myer.
Tennille credits her scientific background as a significant influence on the way she designs giving structure to her creative process. Tennille aspires to maintain an equilibrium between innovative designs, tailoring and sophisticated construction as the key to her aesthetic. Her work creates a point of view where there is a measured evolution of modern silhouettes, with a balance between shape experimentation and traditional construction.
